FALL ART EXHIBITION: JOEL COHEN, now through Dec. 10

FALL ART EXHIBITION: JOEL COHEN, now through Dec. 10

VSC’s Fall Art Exhibit features local artist, Joel Cohen. A long time Mount Washington resident, Joel started painting in 2009 and has completed over 300 canvases combining acrylic paint and mixed media to produce abstract interpretations of people, places and things. In addition, at the top of his feel good list, Joel paints renderings of his friends and business associates’ dogs, or as he calls them, “miracles with paws”.

Described by others as primitive, satirical, or naive, ask Joel to define what he paints and the word “fun” repeats itself over and over. Joel has had no formal training and if you ask him he’ll tell you he can’t even draw, but looking at his finished paintings contradicts what he says. His use of color, especially bright colors, seem to appear in almost all his work and he has created a style so when an onlooker sees his work it has become identifiable as his alone.
NEW ART EXHIBIT: ILENE GOLD

NEW ART EXHIBIT: ILENE GOLD

This summer’s art exhibit at the cafe features the work of Ilene Gold. Prints of Ilene’s collages and two originals (can you spot them?) will be on exhibit at the cafe through mid-September.

Ilene creates collages using only National Geographic Magazines. Cutting 1,000s of pieces of paper and assembling them into a new image. The collage idea started by recreating famous paintings made entirely from National Geographic Magazines. As this medium evolved, a new collection started with the recreation of Ilene Gold’s award winning photographs, still using only National Geographic Magazines. Look closely to find a hidden phrase or words. She tries to capture a painterly quality with each collage, as if she is almost painting with paper.

Her photography from the US, Europe, and the Middle East has won her awards, and has been published in national magazines. Prints of her collages have sold in New York, Paris, and Maryland, Juried art shows of this work have been exhibited at: Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition Recycle Art Juried Show 5/2016 & Color Show 7/16, Maryland Federation of Art’s 39th Annual Art on Paper Exhibition 2016, Howard County Center for the Arts 2014, 2015 & 2016.
